Dombrova had a large number of Jews before the Holocaust. With the beginning of World War II, a large ghetto was established there with more than 20,000 Jews. The iron and coal mines in the area also contributed to its development, the industrial plants grew up in the area. In 1921, the population of Zveirche was 29,507, including 6,095 Jews. In the 14th century, the importance of the city was in the mines around it. Chaldej is a large and scattered border town.
